Charles "Shorty" Whittington
Grammer Industries Founder and CEO, Charles “Shorty” Whittington, has worked in the transportation industry for more than 40 years. Growing up in the heart of an agricultural community in Indiana, he naturally gravitated toward an agri-business career. Observing the diversity of farming and grain elevator operations, Whittington saw a need for specialized transportation, which prompted him to establish Grammer Industries in 1977. For more than the past four decades, Whittington has grown Grammer from a small, fertilizer and grain trucking company into an industry leader in specialized hazardous material transport. Although trucking is Whittington’s passion, his other business ventures involve real estate, renewable fuels and equipment sales.
Whittington is active in the American Trucking Associations (ATA), and served as Chairman of the Association in 2009. He also serves on the Executive Board of the Indiana Motor Truck Association (IMTA) and as a Director and on the Nominating Board of the National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) and is a member of the Agricultural & Food Transporters Conference (AFTC). He is also active in many state propane and fertilizer trade associations, and recently served on a Government Negotiated Rule Making task force involving a safety issue with tanker trailers, one of only five successful such missions of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
In October, 2014 Shorty was awarded The Founders Award from the Indiana Motor Truck Association (IMTA) for his lifetime service and work in the transportation industry.
A graduate of Purdue University, Whittington was named a Purdue Distinguished Agricultural Alumni in 2007. In 2008, he received the Indiana Agri-Vision Award from the State Department of Agriculture.
Whittington and his wife, Ro Anne, reside outside of Columbus, Ind., near the small town of Grammer. They have two grown children, Kristin and John.
